The concept of doing good means two different things to me.
The first thing is to do good for other people. Your work, the art that you make, should strive to be impactful to others. Whether that is physically, emotionally, or spiritually, or that it changes the way they preceive the world. It should, in some small way, change their life or their experience of life.
I think this is very important because if you are making art and not sharing it with the world, you don't set up that feedback loop with others. Your work should be for you, of course, but I think letting your art loose into the world is important to the creative process. Creating in a vauum can be dangerous.
The second meaning of do good, to me, is to find your "good enough", to do good work. To always push yourself and try your best while also keeping in mind that your best can vary from year to year or even day to day. You should always try to put your best foot forward and make your most genuine attempt.
Because if you don't, you aren't doing that project justice. You're not offering yourself to that project in a way that is necessary to fulfill the first part of do good.
It's so important to put yourself in the work because that is what translates into the emotional connection that happens when somebody else experiences it.
So, do good with your work. Make things that impact and move other people while also trying to preserve your own mental and physical health in the process. Do good and thrive through that.
